What Reddit charges
Reddit’s commercial Data API has a floor of $12,000 per month. This price is for access to Reddit’s search and content endpoints at commercial scale. The free tier exists but is limited to personal use, academic research, and moderation bots. Any application that charges users, runs ads, or resells data needs the commercial license.
The free tier allows 100 queries per minute for OAuth and 10 per minute without. These limits are fine for a personal script. They are not enough for a product that monitors keywords for paying customers.
What Reddit forbids
- Commercial applications that resell Reddit data without a paid license.
- Scraping at scale. Reddit’s robots.txt and terms of service block commercial scrapers.
- Automated posting and engagement. Reddit removed over 40 million spam posts in the first half of 2025.
- Applications that present Reddit data outside of Reddit without attribution and compliance.
The enforcement is real. GummySearch is the case study.
Why GummySearch shut down
GummySearch was a Reddit research tool used by over 140,000 founders, marketers, and investors. It shut down on November 30, 2025. The closure page says: "we’re shutting down to comply with Reddit’s API policies, which forbid commercial applications." The founder, Fed, wrote that he would be building more market research products in 2026.
The shutdown has two deadlines. Existing paid subscribers keep access until the end of their billing period, with lifetime deal holders getting until November 30, 2026. All data is deleted on December 1, 2026.
GummySearch’s site still serves the old landing page with a closure banner, a 267-word affiliate alternatives page, and a live sitemap with 25,000 URLs including 21,017 programmatic subreddit pages. Similarweb shows 171,500 visits in the last three months. The traffic is still there. The product is not.
What the surviving tools do instead
Every Reddit monitoring tool that is still running reaches Reddit through one of three paths, none of which uses the Reddit API for commercial search.
- The web index. Google, and the search indexes behind the waterfall, index Reddit post pages. A query with site:reddit.com returns what Google has. This is real but partial: it covers post titles and some self-text but rarely comments, and it lags by hours.
- Direct reading on free tiers. F5Bot reads Reddit directly and delivers alerts for free. It does not resell data. It funds itself through paid tiers that add speed, keywords, and AI filtering, plus small text ads in alert emails.
- Providers whose terms permit it. Some third-party search and data providers have negotiated terms with Reddit or index Reddit content under their own agreements. A monitoring tool that uses these providers passes the compliance burden to the provider.
The tools that rank for Reddit monitoring
The "monitor Reddit for mentions" query on 2026-09-10 is held by Brand24 (a blog guide), Syften (a /reddit tool page), and Octolens (a /reddit-monitoring tool page) in the top three. The "Reddit keyword alerts" query is led by a Medium post, a Play Store app, and small vendors. F5Bot appears in snippets. None of the top results use the Reddit API commercially.
| Tool | How it reaches Reddit | Entry price | Comments coverage |

| Syften | Not stated; tool page at /reddit | $29.95/mo | Not checked |
| SnitchFeed | Not stated; tool page at /monitor/reddit | $47/mo (rendered) | Not checked |

What the Reddit API actually offers
The Reddit API provides search across posts and comments, access to subreddit metadata, user profiles, thread trees, and real-time streaming via the streaming endpoints. For commercial use, the Data API includes bulk historical access and higher rate limits. The free tier is 100 queries per minute with OAuth and 10 per minute without.
For a monitoring product, the key endpoints are search (query posts and comments by keyword) and the streaming endpoints (real-time new posts and comments). These are what GummySearch used and what every surviving tool would use if the terms allowed it. The $12,000/mo commercial floor makes this uneconomical for any product charging less than that.
What GummySearch’s users needed
GummySearch was a Reddit research tool. Its users were founders and marketers looking for buying signals, pain points, and product ideas in subreddit conversations. The core workflow: enter a keyword or subreddit, see matching threads and comments, identify patterns, and either reply or save the lead.
The successors chasing those users split into two camps. Lead generation tools (Redreach, LeadsRadar, RedShip) focus on finding and drafting replies to threads where someone is looking for a product. Research and monitoring tools (Prowlo, SnitchFeed, Octolens) focus on ongoing keyword tracking with alerts. An agent needs the second camp.
The GummySearch successors
The "gummysearch alternative" query draws over a dozen vendors. The strongest page is Prowlo’s at 4,753 words with 22 cited domains, a named author, and "prices checked Sep 2026." Prowlo is MCP-native, $19/mo, and on the official MCP registry. Reddinbox offers AI audience intelligence from Reddit at $39 and $99/mo. LeadsRadar starts at $19/mo. Nobody owns "GummySearch alternative for AI agents" or "GummySearch API replacement."
GummySearch’s own alternatives page is 267 words of affiliate links and still ranks second for its own name. The two remaining deadlines (access ends November 30, 2026; data deleted December 1, 2026) give every page in this space a natural refresh hook this quarter.
What discatch does today
Reddit is reserved as a direct source until a cleared path exists. What discatch can do today: run a web search with site:reddit.com. Indexed Reddit posts arrive as web results with domain reddit.com. Each result carries a prescore and thread counts where the index has them.
This is the same coverage a Google Alert gives, with three differences: delivery to an agent instead of an inbox, a prescore so the agent can filter, and a quote before the call runs.
The coverage gap
Every approach that avoids the Reddit API has a coverage gap. The web index misses comments and is slow. F5Bot catches comments but covers only three sites. Third-party providers may have better coverage but do not disclose their access terms. No tool in the category claims to match what the Reddit API provides at the free or commercial tier.
The honest answer is that Reddit monitoring without the Reddit API is partial. Post titles and some self-text come through the web index. Comments, scores, and real-time streaming do not. Any page or tool that claims full Reddit coverage without disclosing how should be questioned.
discatch is honest about this. Reddit is marked reserved. The sources page says so. Indexed Reddit posts arrive through the web index with a domain field. Direct coverage is planned when a cleared path exists. Free Reddit alerts depend on the same path.
Why Reddit monitoring matters despite the gap
Reddit is the only source in the social listening category with a real long tail of search demand. Google autocomplete shows 10+ completions for "reddit keyword alerts." The GummySearch shutdown displaced 171,500 visits per quarter. Reddit is also where developers and founders discuss tools, compare products, and ask for recommendations in public.
For a product that sells to developers, the Reddit mentions that matter are in posts and comments in subreddits like r/SaaS, r/startups, r/programming, and r/selfhosted. These subreddits are indexed well by Google and covered by the web index. The gap is speed and comment coverage, not existence.
How to monitor Reddit without the Reddit API
- Use F5Bot for free alerts on Reddit, Hacker News, and Lobste.rs. It reads Reddit directly and delivers by email within about two hours on the free tier.
- Set up a Google Alert with site:reddit.com for backstop coverage. It is slow but catches post titles the web index picks up.
- Use discatch’s web search with site:reddit.com for the same coverage as Google Alerts, delivered to an agent with a prescore.
- When discatch ships direct Reddit coverage, it replaces all three with one catch and one destination.
The cost comparison

| F5Bot Platinum | $214.99/mo | API, webhooks, faster delivery, more keywords, AI filtering |
| Octolens Pro | $199/mo monthly | Reddit monitoring plus 14 other sources, API, MCP |
| Syften | $29.95/mo | Reddit plus forums, HN, Bluesky, more; API on every plan, MCP on PRO |
