Monitor the web for mentions

Blogs, docs, comparison pages, news, and every page the search index sees. Posts from Reddit, X, and LinkedIn arrive here with a domain field until direct paths exist.

What is a web monitoring tool and what does it catch?

A web monitoring tool watches blogs, documentation sites, changelogs, comparison pages, news articles, and every other page the search index sees for mentions of your product, your competitors, or your topic. discatch reaches the web through the waterfall, trying the cheapest indexed search first and deeper searches behind it when coverage is set to deep. Posts from Reddit, X, and LinkedIn that the index has picked up arrive as web results with a domain field until direct paths to those sources exist.

What discatch reaches

Anything the web index returns for your query: blog posts, documentation, changelogs, comparison pages, news articles, and indexed posts from social networks that discatch does not reach directly yet. Each result says which domain it came from.

How

Through the waterfall: the cheapest indexed search first, deeper searches behind it when coverage is set to deep. You never see which search ran, only the source and the domain.

A query

One syntax for every source: quotes, AND, OR, NOT, site:, author:, lang:.

query

"your product" -site:yourdomain.com

Good for

  • Reviews, comparisons, and "alternatives to" pages that mention you.
  • Reddit, X, and LinkedIn posts the index has picked up, marked by domain.
  • Competitor announcements on their own sites and in the press.
  • News articles and press coverage, deduplicated with blog results.

What an alert looks like

One result, as a catch delivers it: source, author, the post, a prescore, thread context, and a suggested action your agent can act on.

Notes

  • Reddit, X, and LinkedIn are reserved as sources until a real path exists. Their indexed posts arrive as web results with a domain field, which is real but partial coverage.
  • Deep coverage costs more and the quote says how much before the call runs.
  • News is a scope on the same waterfall. A search that names both web and news dedups across them.

Why web monitoring matters and who is not covering it

Google Alerts is the backstop most people start with. It covers web and news, but it does not index forums, does not catch comments, lags by hours, and has no API. The pages that rank for "web monitoring tool" today are Octolens, Awario, and Brand24, all behind dashboards. None of them give you a quote before the call runs, and none push results to your agent. discatch covers the same web index through the waterfall and adds developer sources, a quote on every call, and push to any destination.

What a catch on the web is good at

  1. Comparison and "alternatives to" pages that mention your product. These rank in search and shape decisions.
  2. Blog posts and changelogs from competitors, caught the day they publish.
  3. Indexed Reddit, X, and LinkedIn posts marked by domain, so you know where the conversation is even before direct sources ship.
  4. News articles and press coverage, deduplicated with blog results so a syndicated piece counts once.
  5. Documentation and README files that list you as a dependency or an alternative.

Example queries

Mentions excluding your own site

"your product" -site:yourdomain.com

Competitor pricing changes

("octolens" OR "brand24") AND (pricing OR "price increase")

Reddit posts through the web index

site:reddit.com "your product"

Reddit, X, and LinkedIn through the web index

Reddit, X, and LinkedIn are reserved as direct sources until a real path exists. Today their indexed posts arrive as web results with a domain field. Use site:reddit.com, site:x.com, or site:linkedin.com in your query to filter for them. Coverage is real but partial: the index only sees some posts. When direct sources ship, the domain field disappears and results move to the source they belong to.

How the waterfall works for web searches

The waterfall tries searches in order of cost and accuracy. The cheapest indexed search runs first. If you set coverage to deep, more searches run behind it. Each search returns candidates. discatch merges and deduplicates the candidates, re-filters them against your full boolean query, and returns the matches. You never see which search ran. The quote prices both fast and deep so you can compare before the call runs.

The quote mechanism

Every web search accepts dry_run: true and returns the quote alone. The quote is a ceiling with locked unit prices: the charge never exceeds it. For catches, the quote is computed at registration time and updated if the catch parameters change. Catches that fire with zero new results cost nothing.

Questions

Is Web monitoring live?

Not yet. Web is in the first set of sources, phase 1b of the roadmap, and discatch is pre-launch. The API serves the doctor manifest today, and the manifest’s sources_now list is the truth for what is live. When phase 1b ships, catches on this source reach web through the waterfall.

What does a web search cost?

One search unit per call, plus one result unit per matched item. The quote tells you the ceiling before anything runs. Deep coverage costs more than fast.

Does web include Reddit?

Indexed Reddit posts arrive as web results with domain reddit.com. Reddit as a direct source is reserved until a cleared path exists.

Does web include X?

Indexed posts from X arrive as web results with domain x.com. Coverage is real but thin because the index only sees some posts.

Does web include LinkedIn?

Indexed public LinkedIn posts arrive as web results with domain linkedin.com. LinkedIn has had no content API since 2015 and coverage is partial across the industry.

How fresh are web results?

As fresh as the index. For fast-moving conversation, pair a web catch with Hacker News and Discourse, which discatch reads directly.

What is the difference between fast and deep coverage?

Fast uses the cheapest indexed search. Deep lets the waterfall try more searches at higher cost. The quote prices both so you can compare before the call runs.

Is news separate from web?

News is a scope on the same waterfall. Name news as a source to get press only. A search that names both web and news dedups so a syndicated piece counts once.

How does web compare to Google Alerts?

Google Alerts covers web and news but has no API, no webhook, no forums, no comments, and lags by hours. discatch gives you a quote, pushes results to your agent, and covers forums and developer sources alongside the web.

Which competitors have a web monitoring page?

Octolens has /web-monitoring and /news-monitoring. Awario and Brand24 cover web and news behind dashboards. None of them quote before the call or push to an agent.

What is the domain field on web results?

Every web result carries a domain field saying where the page came from. A result with domain reddit.com is a Reddit post the index picked up. A result with domain blog.example.dev is a blog post. The domain field lets you filter and sort results by source even when they all come from the web index.
